Walks by the Grand Etang are relatively flat and not too difficult: you can either walk all around the lake, do a return trip to the waterfall for a swim, or simply admire the surroundings from the viewpoint and picnic areas. One important feature is that you don’t necessarily have to turn up early in the morning nor drive a long way to get there, if you’re coming from the north or the east. (7km into the road leading up to La Plaine des Palmistes, turn right at the signposts to Grand Etang). You can also visit the area on horseback, as there is a riding centre located nearby. The amount of water in the lake varies according to season and rainfall, and with several endemic species of birds, it really is a wonderful place to visit.
